A former Brisbane Broncos star, a prominent theatre identity and a nurse are among the dozens of Queenslanders who can now be named among those charged with sexual offences.

New legislation that came into effect at midnight Tuesday lifted the longstanding prohibition against identifying people charged with prescribed sexual offences before their cases have been committed to trial.

These are some of the high-profile matters we can now tell you about.

None of those listed have been required to enter a plea in relation to these matters to date.

DEFENDANTS WHOSE IDENTITIES ARE STILL SUPPRESSED

The new legislation allows those accused of the prescribed offences to make an application for non-publication orders to stop them from being identified.

At least two people charged with rape were able to secure interim orders to prevent their identification in an eleventh hour legal applications late last week.

They are:

A high profile Toowoomba man

A well-known man has been charged with two counts of rape, alleged to have been committed in October 2021.

Police will alleged the man raped a young woman he met on a night out at a Toowoomba strip club.

He was issued with a notice to appear in December and his case has been mentioned multiple times this year.

The law changes would have allowed him to be identified from midnight Tuesday but he was granted an interim non-publication order on Friday by the Brisbane Supreme Court.

A further hearing in the magistrates court will be held to decide whether his identity will continue to be suppressed under the new legislation.

Channel 7 television identity

A woman charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and torture secured an interim non-publication order in the Richlands Magistrates Court last week.

The woman, who featured on a Channel 7 television show, is alleged to have committed the offences over a period spanning more than 10 years.

Her partner is also facing charges of assault.

It’s understood the woman’s case will also come before the magistrates court for a further hearing to decide an application for an ongoing non publication order.
