Car lovers across the country are eagerly waiting to see what price-tag this rare Aussie muscle car fetches at auction this weekend.
A 1977 Holden Torana A9X, one of only 33 of its kind ever made, is up for grabs this weekend and expected to go for top dollar.
With only 475km on the clock, it’s as close to new as possible for a car built more than 40 years ago.
After a long period of racing with a four-door Torana, Holden developed the two-door hatchback, which enjoyed success at Bathurst in 78 and 79 with Peter Brock and Jim Richards at the wheel.
The A9X was the final model for Holden racing before the V8 commodores were introduced.
There were just 33 shells built, and their introduction was controversial because they were lighter than the competition at the time.
Holden threatened to withdraw from racing if the shells were not accepted.
The shells were double seam welded, all painted white, and sold exclusively to race teams.
They were not assigned VIN numbers.
Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions, Lee Hames said the muscle car was one of the most sought-after in the country and the time was ripe for the owner.
“This is the holy grail of Holden motor collector cars in Australia” Mr Hames said.
“Since Holden closed their doors many muscle car enthusiasts are mourning the loss of performance cars, and there has since been a resurgence in these classic cars” he said.
Mr Hames said records could fall at this weekend’s auction.
“In the last six to 12 months, we have seen rare and significant Holdens increase in value,” he said.
“While the very last Holden off the production line sold for $750,000, a Harvey A9X Torana sold for $910,000 and a special 1 of 4 Holden Maloo Ute sold for $1,100,000 in January.”
Mr Hames said with this style of vehicle becoming increasingly scarce, the rise in demand and market value had been astronomical.
While bids will come in from around the country and is open to overseas buyers, Mr Hames said he would be surprised if the vehicle left Australian shores.
“For those interested in a fantastic investment or just a deep sentimental and patriotic connection to Holden, this is the car they have been waiting for” he said.
Bidding for the 1977 Torana A9X will begin at midday on Saturday, June 26, where bids will made from the showroom at Villawood in Sydney, online, and over the phone.
