Love auctions but can’t get out to watch this weekend because of lockdown?
Never fear, welcome to the Herald Sun’s new auction blog.
We broadcast three homes going under the hammer from Geelong — where onsite auctions have been given the go-ahead — as well as highlighting some of the best sales from Melbourne as they happened.
Rewatch the auctions below.
7 BROWNBILL ST, GEELONG
Ending our auction coverage with a bang was the sale of 7 Brownbill St, Geelong, which sold for $1.585 million.
A battle between four onsite and four online bidders pushed the renovated Edwardian’s price tag $385,000 above its original asking price of $1.2 million.
Hodges Geelong auctioneer Marcus Falconer highlighted the four-bedroom home’s positioning in the heart of the city as its biggest assets.
“Location, location, location” he said.
Mr Falconer added that the vendors had lived at the property for about 20 years and hoped the new owners would “enjoy and love it as much as they have”.

146 SKENE ST, NEWTOWN
In Newtown, Buxton agent Ben Riddle was at the helm of the auction for 146 Skene St, which marched $300,000 above the top end of its asking price to sell for $2.305 million this afternoon.
Three bidders were on site for the sale, including the winner who was bidding on behalf of someone in Melbourne.
Mr Riddle urged buyers to “put your best foot forward” for the 1400sq m property with a pool, which he said was also within “20 minutes of world class beaches”.

24 MAITLAND ST, GEELONG WEST
Our first live stream was a period-inspired weatherboard cottage at 24 Maitland Street, Geelong West, near the famed Pakington St cafe strip.
The stylish three-bedroom home sold under the hammer for $1.06m — surpassing its original $900,000-$950,000 price guide in under 15 minutes.

The winning bid came from an online participant, who was bidding on behalf of a local buyer who loves the area and character of the home.
McGrath Geelong agent David Cortous said the property was in a “fantastic location … with everything on your doorstep”.
MELBOURNE AUCTIONS
348 CANADIAN BAY RD, MT ELIZA
Towards the beach, a three-bedroom home in Mt Eliza flew above reserve in a “fast and furious” bidding war that lasted just six minutes.
The 348 Canadian Bay Road property quickly notched a $1.2 million sale after 32 bids — which was more than $200,000 above the vendors reserve.
O’Brien Real Estate Mornington auctioneer Fraser Bayne called the property on the market at $1.06 million, at the two minute mark of the auction, before the hammer fell less than five minutes later.
38 WILLIAM ST, OAKLEIGH
Back in Melbourne, Ray White Oakleigh auctioneer Robert Cincotta could barely contain his excitement as a “picture perfect” modern home sold in about 10 minutes.
The four-bedroom house was called on the market after just three bids, at $1.55 million, before a fierce and fast-paced auction took the sale to $1.67 million.
Mr Cincotta said it was a “great home … in a great location … not to missed”.
15 JARRAH CRT, GLEN WAVERLEY
Meanwhile a brown-brick property in the prized Brentwood Secondary catchment was snapped up for $1.2705 million after a mammoth hour of bidding.
A handful of parties pushed the sale of the three-bedroom house more than $80,000 above reserve via an online auction.
Ray White Glen Waverley auctioneer Andrew Davies called the property a “beautiful family home with potential”.
7 HENDERSON ST, NORTHCOTE
In the city’s trendy north, a humble two-bedroom home sold more than $300,000 above asking price this morning.
An opening bid of $1 million didn’t deter five bidders from battling it out for the property via an online sale, which was officiated by McGrath Northcote principal Gino De Iesi.
It eventually sold for $1.43 million.
The property was being marketed as the perfect spot to “create a home you long for”.
Earlier this week, acting premier James Merlino announced Melbourne would remain in a coronavirus-driven lockdown for another seven days.
And while the extension is expected to hamper city auctions, Realestate.com.au chief economist Cameron Kusher said strong autumn sales had been “making up for lost time”.
He said he expected demand to ease slightly during the winter months and that the “next wave of buyers won’t be quite as large and we will see some of the heat continue to ease”.
