Police make dramatic arrest after bizarre chase in Queensland

Police had to wade through thick vegetation to find an alleged thief who had ditched his clothes during a dramatic chase.

A naked man who sent police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car has been arrested in a Queensland canefield.

Police embarked on a manhunt after a car was allegedly stolen from a service station at El Arish in far north Queensland on Wednesday about 7am.

The alleged thief drove the silver Toyota HiLux on the wrong side of the road on the Bruce Highway in the Tully area at high speeds, police reported.

A rescue helicopter was brought in to assist with the dramatic search, which lead police to a nearby canefield.

The alleged crook dumped the car near Tully-Hull Rd before running into the field to hide.

Spying the alleged car thief, officers raced into the field before arresting the man, capturing the moment on their bodycam footage.

“This is a taser! Don’t move!” an officer can be heard saying in the bizarre video.

It’s unknown why the man was naked.

Police charged the 34-year-old Mount Low man with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without due care and attention and obstructing police.

He was also charged with attempting to escape lawful custody over accusations he allegedly fled Tully Hospital while being treated for minor injuries after his arrest.

Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage on the Bruce Highway at Tully between 6.50am and 7.15am on Wednesday, August 17 to contact local police.
