A teenager allegedly shot his neighbour dead at close range with an unregistered shotgun over an argument about a barking dog in the state’s central west.

Police were called to Porter St, Parkes, just before 5pm on Monday to find a 25-year-old man with a critical gunshot wound to the chest.

He was rushed to Parkes Hospital where he died. Nathan Price, 18, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder and firearms offences.

Central West Police Superintendent Chris Taylor said the two men confronted each other over the victim’s barking dog.

A woman who knows Mr Price and did not want to be named, told The Daily Telegraph the incident started when his girlfriend was walking her dog before an argument broke out.

“A fight has started with one of his neighbours and Nathan’s girlfriend about a dog barking while she was out walking the dog,” she said.

“The girlfriend was running home screaming, Nathan ran out to see what was going on.”

Police will allege the victim was holding something akin to an “axe handle” during the argument.

“The shooting resulted from a neighbour dispute between a couple of neighbours over there in relation to some barking dogs,” Supt Taylor said.

He said that police will allege “the victim took some actions which resulted in the accused arming himself with an unregistered shotgun and that’s when they confronted each other, that’s when the victim was shot.

“There was only one shot fired and it would seem it may have been at reasonably close range and it was a shotgun.”

Price did not apply for bail in Parkes Local Court on Tuesday and he was formally refused bail to reappear to August 19.
