Meghan Markle should be allowed to cross her legs in front of the Queen

DUCHESS of Sussex Meghan Markle may have committed a royal sin when she crossed her legs in front of the Queen earlier this week, but we don’t want her to be another ‘cookie cutter’ royal, writes Susie O’Brien.

WELCOME TO married life, Meghan.

Your dad’s a disgrace, your dress doesn’t fit and you crossed your legs in front of the Queen.

With the fairy tale wedding a distant memory, the new Duchess of Sussex is copping it from all sides.

Honeymoon? What honeymoon?

Meghan is attracting criticism for being too giggly with the Queen, having bare legs and having her shoulders uncovered at Trooping of the Colour.

But it was this week’s “minor slip-up with royal posture and protocol” on Tuesday that has blown my mind.

Meghan didn’t have her knickers tucked into her undies. She didn’t fall off a stage. She didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction or a nip slip. No, she committed the mortal sin of crossing her legs.

Apparently, the royal pins should be uncrossed.

Her position attracted hundreds of comments online and spawned many `articles.

As The Express newspaper pointed out tartly, “the crossing of the legs is a seating position rarely adopted by royals”.

As the article explained, Meghan soon realised what she was doing and adopted the “duchess slant”.

From now on she will sit with her knees together and legs crossed at the ankles at an angle. It’s her sister-in-law’s go-to pose.

I feel sorry for Meghan who must be getting highly sick of the intense scrutiny of her every move.

The pressure is clearly mounting because we are seeing changes in this young woman.

No more messy buns or loose hair tendrils. No more bare legs. Now it’s pantyhose all the way.

Her handbags are now little clutches, not proper bags with shoulder straps that she wore so jauntily.

All of this means she risks losing her signature style and becoming just another cookie-cutter Royal.

She’s now dressing like a woman twice her age in boring beige and perfect PR-girl loose curls.

All the thing we have long loved about Meghan — her refusal to conform, her energy and her enthusiasm have gone.

Her cute nervousness, her PDA with her handsome prince and her crazy family have also gone by the wayside.

I don’t blame her for wanting to conform, but I do think it’s a pity.

Who wouldn’t want to make themselves a small target in her position?

When she went rogue and wore a loose-fitting flowing flowered dress to a wedding a few weeks ago, she was widely panned.

It cost more than $4000 and was Oscar de la Renta, but that didn’t stop people from likening it to a doona cover and a sack of potatoes.

There are even claims her father’s wedding suit has been recycled and worn by someone else at Royal Ascot.

Take that, Meghan. People seem to be saying. You were good enough to jag a prince, but you’re not good enough to be a Royal.

What a shame. This vibrant young woman deserves better than this.
