Asthma Australia are behind a push to ban wood fires in new homes.
“We’re urging governments to ban wood heaters in new homes in residential areas for healthier living and cleaner air,” the charity that receives millions in government support posted on X this week.
“Wood heaters emit harmful pollutants into neighbourhoods that damage health. Efficient electric heating supports healthier homes and communities.”
How about a big fat NO.
How about we do not ban something as essential as fire in the name of safety.
Wood heaters and fireplaces are one of life’s great pleasures.
There is something wonderfully therapeutic about building and tending a fire whether you’re camping or in your favourite armchair with a glass of wine and a good book.
If you are suffering from asthma then you have my sympathy but you’re not getting my fireplace.
Are we also going to ban hazard burns because they negatively impact some asthmatics?
On social media, the asthmatics were out in force defending wood heaters and giving Asthma Australia some sage words of advice.
“I have chronic asthma. I don’t need your silly interference. Don’t take our wood heaters,” wrote DeniseR Tex Oz.
“I have asthma, love wood heaters and fire pits. Get out of our lives, if people with asthma don’t like smoke, hide inside,” wrote Timmy Dub.
“Imagine making a post that could destroy your entire organisation because you’re so disconnected from the very people you’re apparently trying to help,” posted Paul Cherry.
Asthma Australia has shown appalling judgment in seeking a ban on wood heaters.
