Any conservative who pays even a cent to see Candace Owens is no conservative at all

Conservatives can’t crow too much about the intellectual rot that’s turned the Left into a parody of itself. The same is now happening on the Right.

Conservatives can’t crow too much about the intellectual rot that’s turned the Left into a parody of itself. The same is now happening on the Right.

Look at the ghastly Tucker Carlson, or Candace Owens, booked to tour Australia in November.

Carlson, once a star on Fox News, used to campaign for freedom.

Now with 14 million followers on Twitter, he’s defended bloody Russian dictator Vladimir Putin but smeared Volodymyr Zelensky, the Jewish president of freedom-fighting Ukraine, as a “sweaty and rat-like ... persecutor of Christians”.

Last week Carlson even claimed he was “highly distressed” that “myths about World War II” had been used to contrast Zelensky with Putin: “You know, Churchill’s the good guy, Neville Chamberlain’s the bad guy.”

He then had an amateur historian vent: “Churchill was the villain of the Second World War ... He was primarily responsible for that war becoming what it did.”

Or take Owens, who once fought the new racism of identity politics which cast blacks as eternal victims. She’s now got five million followers on Instagram by preaching, for instance, that Lenin and Stalin were Jews, Jews follow “a pedophile centric religion that believes in demons, believes in child sacrifice”, and French President Emmanuel Macron is a gay man married to a transgender woman.

She even plays that tawdry race card she’d deplored, claiming I attack her idiocy because she’s black.

What’s happening on these fringes of the Right isn’t as dangerous as the decay of the Left, which has more cultural power and causes more damage as it, too, becomes what it claimed to oppose.

It once claimed to fight state tyranny, racism, anti-Semitism, censorship and superstitions. Now it promotes them, with its cancel culture and green hysteria.

In fact, the media Left helped to create an audience for Carlson and Watson by preaching so many untruths – the “climate crisis”, Donald Trump colluded with Russia, Joe Biden isn’t going gaga – that millions turned to false prophets on social media claiming to tell truths “the mainstream media won’t”.

Now Owens plans to slug Australians $95 a head on her tour this month, but any conservative who pays even a cent to see her is no conservative at all.

They, too, are the opposite of what many claim: not sceptical searchers for hard truths, but gullible rubes swallowing easy lies.

Not individuals standing against the mob, but tribalists too scared to offend their own by saying boo to a mad goose.
