So off Anthony Albanese flies again, on his 20th trip in just 18 months, instead of staying home to deal with disasters that have left Australians less safe.

The PM is off to APEC, a week after he was in the Pacific, promising to save 280 Tuvaluan “climate refugees” whose islands are, er, actually growing.

The refugees he should really worry about are ones just freed from immigration detention, along with other criminals – 83 in all. It’s extraordinary to have such a huge jail break. Free are at least one child rapist, two murderers, one assassin, and other sex offenders.

Yes, the High Court is most to blame, after ruling the government could not indefinitely hold non-citizen criminals who couldn’t be returned to their countries, or faced execution there.

But how sleepy was Albanese?

His government released a dozen of these criminals as “unlawful non-citizens”, and only gave them a temporary visa days later. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has not denied it.

Why didn’t the government prepare better for this day? Pass emergency legislation to get around this problem?

Don’t ask the Prime Minister, he’s out of here. But worse is that this isn’t the only security shambles he’s leaving.

Newly appointed National Cyber Security Coordinator,
Air Marshal Darren Goldie, was ordered back to the Defence Force on Wednesday “to deal with a workplace matter related to his time in Defence” – just after a hack attack on our ports.

Meanwhile, the highly capable secretary of the Home Affairs Department, Michael Pezzullo,
is on his second month of suspension for having given political advice to a then Liberal powerbroker.

Then there’s the fear felt by Jewish Australians, with mobs using the excuse of the war in Gaza to persecute Jews here.

It’s shameful and horrific.

A supplier of jumping castles jeered she wouldn’t accept “blood money” from a Jewish school; a baying crowd of Muslims shouted insults at Jews outside a synagogue in Caulfield; a man cycling in Melbourne’s Chapel St with an Israeli flag was bashed; a tradesman allegedly threatened to kill four Jewish boys if they didn’t hide their flags; protesters at the Sydney Opera House chanted “gas the Jews”. Next a “school strike” for Palestine.

But where’s the leadership from the PM to assure panicking Jews? If Albanese must travel, he should go not to San Francisco but Caulfield and Bondi Beach, and show some damn leadership.
