Andrew Bolt: Same-sex marriage debate is disgusting and dangerous
THE biggest debate is no longer same-sex marriage itself, because this debate has exposed thuggery by activists and an immoral use of power by the elite, writes Andrew Bolt.

I’M scared. This brawl over same-sex marriage has been disgusting and dangerous.
I have friends and family on both sides of the argument and know it’s not all one way or the other. Whichever way it goes, we’ll get by. I hope.
But we thought the real argument would be about same-sex marriage — did it weaken the marriage tradition or expand it?
Instead, the biggest debate now is how we’ll resolve this.
That’s because this debate has exposed thuggery by activists and, I believe, an immoral use of power by the elite.
Take Clover Moore, Sydney’s Lord Mayor, who wants to spend $100,000 of ratepayers’ money on the “yes” campaign and not one cent on the “no” in the public vote the Left tried everything to stop.

But Moore’s ratepayers do not all support gay marriage. By what moral right can she use the rates of all to back a crusade opposed by some? Wouldn’t a true democrat divide funding fairly?
Same with the Labor-Greens ACT Government. Why does it give the “yes” campaign $45,000 of help and the “no” nothing?
This reveals an authoritarian mindset that runs right through the same-sex marriage lobby. That shows up most dramatically in the threats, abuse and violence aimed at the Australian Christian Lobby, or in activists taking three Christian preachers to Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Tribunal.
But there’s also the muscle-flexing by activists who’ve captured private organisations.

For example, the leaders of the Australian Medical Association put out a statement supporting gay marriage without first consulting members.
Worse, they falsely claimed there were no peer-reviewed studies showing children of same-sex partners were more likely to struggle, and refused to admit the truth even when some 400 doctors protested, presenting at least five such studies.
The leaders of the NSW Law Society also endorsed same-sex marriage without asking members, and after just 10 of the society’s 22 board members backed it.
Journalists on the ABC have misused their power, too. They are meant by law to be impartial, but have barracked for same-sex marriage so fiercely management officially warned them to stop.
Add to that the media lies and exaggerations, as shown last week by fake claims Melbourne was “plastered” with a homophobic poster nobody had actually seen.
Is this how our elite settles debates now? Not with reason and a vote, but threats, lies and force?
