Andrew Bolt: Bullies and thuggery make civil debate on gay marriage impossible

I COULD be talked into backing same-sex marriage. But never while we’ve got bullies attacking Margaret Court for simply saying gay marriage offends her Christian values, writes Andrew Bolt.

Meshel Laurie bites back at Margaret Court over controversial opinions on gay marriage

I COULD be talked into backing same-sex marriage. But never while we’ve got the kind of bullies attacking Margaret Court.

No way. Not when I see them piling into the 74-year-old tennis great for simply saying gay marriage offends her Christian values.

You know what’s far more important than same-sex marriage? It’s stopping this new thuggery that makes it impossible to hold a civil debate where people dare to speak and reason wins.

Try to debate Islam and you risk being screamed down as a racist or threatened with harm.

Try to protest against the new racism of the Left and you risk being vilified or sued for $250,000, even if you’re just a student complaining against racial segregation at your university.

Try to point out that global warming hasn’t produced the predicted catastrophes and you’re likened to Holocaust deniers.

Argue against any of this, and Leftists in Melbourne will physically attack your rallies or meetings.

And oppose same-sex marriage and you face losing your business or job. Just see how Court is being smashed. Sneering hosts on The Project mock her, talk over her and cut her off. Twitter goes nuts with abuse.

Worse, moral showboaters demand her name be removed from the Margaret Court Arena.

Take Fairfax columnist Peter FitzSimons: “Does Melbourne Park really want to have an arena named after someone who stands so firmly against such inclusiveness, who is becoming a byword for bigot?”

Actually, Peter, a bigot is a man who’d strip Australia’s greatest female tennis player of a sporting honour simply because she holds a different opinion to yours.

Same-sex marriage activists claim they campaign for respect and tolerance, but many show none themselves.

We’ve seen them bombard a hotel with threats and abuse until it cancelled a meeting of the Australian Christian Lobby there.

Activists also forced a Catholic archbishop to face Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, and trashed the office of Senator Cory Bernardi.

They took aim at IBM until one of its top executives resigned from a Christian organisation against gay marriage, and they forced Coopers to scrap a commercial it sponsored of a Christian MP politely debating a colleague.

Meanwhile, Labor and Greens politicians block a public vote that would let Australians have their say. Enough. No debate should be won by such bullies.

What would they do next? Put opponents on trial?
