Andrew Bolt: Anthony Albanese’s recognition of a Palestinian state will end in tears

How can Anthony Albanese recognise a Palestinian state that only strengthens terrorists, and if Hamas supports what he’s doing, shouldn’t that tell him everything he needs to know?

Prime Minister, stop. Do not embarrass Australia and yourself.

Can’t you hear Hamas terrorists literally cheering you?

In fact, just last Saturday Ghazi Hamad, a senior leader of the Hamas terrorist group, crowed that slaughtering 1200 Jews on October 7, 2023, had been worth it.

Look, he gloated: “Had any country dared to recognise the state of Palestine, prior to October 7?”

Yet, unbelievably, Anthony Albanese is now doing exactly what’s delighting this Hamas leader and making him think that murdering, raping, beheading and kidnapping Jews has now paid off.

Albanese is making clear he’s about to recognise a Palestinian state, probably next month at the United Nations, and on Monday night even rang Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, to tell him about his plan, claiming “a just and lasting peace depends upon it”.

How naive can you get? Abbas must have laughed up his sleeve.

You see, just talking to Abbas should already have told Albanese his plan would end in tears, and make him look a fool for years to come.

Abbas naturally figures he’d lead his new state because he already runs the Palestinian West Bank, while Hamas terrorists run Gaza, the other half of Palestine.

And since Albanese says Hamas can’t be allowed to lead his Palestinian state – without saying how he’d stop it – that just leaves Abbas.

But look at this guy Albanese is treating as his confidant.

Abbas is a rabid Jew hater whose government pays pensions to relatives of terrorists killed or jailed after attacking Israel, and he’s even defended Adolf Hitler, saying Hitler didn’t slaughter 6 million Jews just because he was a racist, but because they were money grubbers.

He said Hitler “fought the Jews because they were dealing with usury and money”, and the Holocaust “was not about Semitism and anti-Semitism.”

There’s another reason Albanese should have thought, hang on, involving Abbas in my Palestinian state? Am I crazy?

Abbas is now in the 20th year of his four-year term as president. He hasn’t held another election in all that time because polls show most Palestinians hate him and his corrupt mates, and would probably vote for Hamas instead.

That’s even more likely if Hamas gets the credit for getting a Palestinian state.

So here’s Albanese planning something that makes Hamas stronger, and makes Hamas supporters think they were justified in murdering Jews and keeping some 20 Jewish hostages even now.

Worse, Albanese’s Palestinian state would almost certainly be run by terrorists or anti-democratic and corrupt Jew haters, unless someone – who? – sends in an occupying force.

Albanese seems some innocent with no idea what kind of people he’s dealing with in that brutal part of the world – and no idea of what Israel is up against.

Or maybe he doesn’t care.

Albanese apparently thinks all these dangers are worth it because recognising a Palestinian state makes peace come closer. As he says, it “would make a positive difference.”

Oh, please.

Recognition ends nothing. It just starts fresh arguments, and almost certainly more fighting – but this time with Hamas and other Palestinian extremists in a stronger position, having their own state.

Consider this: if Albanese recognises a Palestinian state, he must agree to its borders.

So are they the old 1967 borders that usually get demanded? Borders that would mean forcing some 700,000 Israelis to move out of what then becomes the new Palestinian state?

Israel would never agree. For one, those old borders would leave Israel with no control over the dangerous West Bank border with Jordan. They would leave a new Palestinian army within just a mortar shot of Israel’s main airport. Israel’s generals say those borders would be indefensible, almost cutting Israel in half.

That’s why Israel has already offered Palestinians their own state – three times – but with land swaps so that Israel is safe. And each time Palestinian leaders said no.

But they didn’t just say no because of quibbles about exactly where the new border would be.

Truth is, they say they just don’t want any deal that lets Israel exist. Ghazi Hamad spelled it out two years ago: “Israel is a country that has no place on our land … We must remove that country.”

That’s what’s meant by that slogan you hear at anti-Israel protests: “From the river to the sea.”

So how can Albanese recognise a Palestinian state that just makes terrorists stronger? If Hamas loves what he’s doing, shouldn’t that tell him everything?
