Andrew Bolt: Andrew Thorburn’s exit proves bigots think Christians can go to hell

Daniel Andrews revealed his real “tolerance” as he smeared Andrew Thorburn for two days straight as a homophobe.

‘Disgrace’: Essendon caved into ‘intolerance’ over Thorburn appointment

What ugly bigots infest this country, shrieking of their “tolerance” as they force Andrew Thorburn to quit as boss of the Essendon Football Club for being a Christian.

See Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews school these anti-Christian hypocrites on Thorburn: “There’s no place for bigotry… That kind of intolerance, hatred and bigotry is just wrong.”

Oh, feel the Premier’s throbbing “tolerance” as he smears Thorburn for two days straight as a homophobe.

But hang on. Thorburn, back when he headed the NAB, got the AFL to use the bank-sponsored pre-season competition to “raise awareness of the LGBTI community”.

Thorburn told the Herald Sun: “At NAB we believe in diversity — we want everyone to be themselves at work, home and at the footy.”

That’s true Christian tolerance. Nothing like what you see from our “tolerance” gestapo. They’re now vilifying Thorburn as a menace to gays and women, and driven him out after just 30 hours as Essendon’s boss because … he’s a Christian.

The AFL, which laughably claims it’s committed to “an inclusive workplace”, was already bristling at Thorburn’s appointment, reporting on its website: “New Dons CEO to lead ‘inclusive’ club despite divisive church links.”

We know the AFL and the media would not denounce “divisive links” to a mosque if Thorburn were Muslim instead. See how gentle the AFL was with the Muslim player in the women’s league who refused to wear a gay pride jumper.

But the “diversity” thugs want every diversity except Christianity, and went for Thorburn.

You see, he’s chairman of the City on a Hill church, which on its website has a sermon saying abortion — the killing of a fetus — is “murder”, which has also been the Catholic church’s position for centuries.

That sermon says: “Future generations will look back with sadness at the legal murder of hundreds of thousands of human beings every day through medicine and in the name of freedom.”

Another sermon says sex outside marriage is against Biblical teaching, and therefore gay sex is wrong. Not being gay, mind you, but having gay sex.

Well, that was Andrews’ excuse for smashing Thorburn and his church for not being as tolerant as their intolerant Premier, and not being as cool about aborting babies.

And the Essendon board crumbled. In a statement as hypocritical as it was bigoted, the board admitted the sermons were from nine years ago, before Thorburn became chairman of his church. It admitted Thorburn had never seen those sermons or himself expressed such views.

Nor had Thorburn been hired by the club to preach religion.

Yet it still decreed Thorburn “couldn’t continue to serve in his dual roles at the Essendon Football Club and as Chairman of City on the Hill” because the church’s values weren’t the club’s.

Thorburn rightly refused to choose between his faith and his job, so out he went – because he was linked to a church linked to a pastor who nine years ago said Christians should be sad about abortions and not have sex outside marriage.

If that wasn’t appalling enough, cop the club’s monumental hypocrisy.

In the very same statement shafting this Christian, this club’s board piously declared: “We … support wholeheartedly the work of the AFL in continuing to stamp out any discrimination based on race, sex, religion …”

Guys, wakey wakey! Spare us your lies, or wake up to your shame.

Thorburn knows what’s going on, and said it was “clear to me that my personal Christian faith is not tolerated or permitted in the public square, at least by some and perhaps by many”.

Many Christians knew this already. They’ve seen Israel Folau banned from playing rugby league because of his Christian beliefs, Hobart’s Catholic Archbishop dragged before an anti-discrimination tribunal for outlining church teachings against gay marriage, and the conservative Cardinal George Pell hit by Andrews’ police with 26 charges of pedophilia against nine “victims” that were so ludicrous that every one collapsed or was dismissed.

Thorburn rightly argues “people should be able to hold different views on complex personal and moral matters, and be able to live and work together” by showing “respect”, but that’s not good enough for people now using “tolerance” as a licence to be bigots and bullies.

So here we are, facing a moral abyss. A man whose church mourns for aborted babies is persecuted, while another man who openly used a remote-controlled vibrator on his girlfriend in a restaurant is our Australian of the Year.

Because we’re so tolerant, you see. Except to Christians. They can go to hell.
