The child was reported missing to police on Friday afternoon before a search and rescue response was launched.

However, the child was found dead later on Friday afternoon a short distance from their home.

Police would not confirm the age or gender of the child but said they were under five.

They would not confirm where the child lived, only that they were from the East Arnhem Region.

Police said they were working with the child’s family.

A police spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday morning that no one had been arrested or charged over the matter.

Investigations remain ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
