July 18, 11.15am: NT Police accidentally spiked three “civilian cars” as they tried to stop an allegedly stolen vehicle full of teens driving “dangerously” around Alice Springs on Thursday night.

The five male teenagers aged between 13 and 17 were arrested after police deployed tyre deflation devices at the Tom Brown roundabout before 10pm, stopping the grey Nissan Navara.

Police allege the vehicle was stolen from a business on Wednesday morning and was used to drive “dangerously” around the city the following night.

“Around 7:15pm on Thursday, police received a report of a grey Nissan Navara chasing security vehicles in Alice Springs,” an NT Police spokeswoman said.

“Police observed the vehicle driving dangerously in the CBD, before it left the area travelling towards East Side.

“The vehicle subsequently returned and was sighted driving dangerously both on and off the road in Todd Street.

“A resolution plan involving members from the Territory Safety Division, Social Order, Crime, and general duties was formulated, and tyre deflation device (TDD) points were established.

“A short pursuit commenced, and TDDs were successfully deployed on the vehicle in the Alice Springs CBD.

“It continued south along the Stuart Highway before coming to a stop on a dirt track adjacent to the highway in Kilgariff.

“The five male occupants, aged 13, 13, 14, 14, and 17, fled the vehicle and were arrested without incident after a short foot chase.

“They have all been charged in relation to this incident and will appear in court at a later date.

“Three civilian cars were inadvertently spiked during the operation, with police reimbursing the owners for the damage to the tyres.

“No injuries were reported.”
