The NT Greens have put forward two Alice Springs residents as candidates for the senate in the May 3 federal election, Aia Newport and Hugo Wells.

Newport, who uses they/them pronouns, has worked in education, youth work, and the arts, and was described as someone committed to real action on climate change, government accountability, protecting queer rights, and First Nations justice.

A first time political candidate, Newport said they were running for the Greens “because I want big corporations and billionaires to pay their fair share so all Australians can have a good life”

“The Territory is on the forefront of the climate crisis, yet the major parties are continuing to give handouts to the dying fossil fuel industry,” they said.

“Territorians deserve politicians who put the safety and prosperity of people above the interests of multinational gas companies.

“The Greens don’t take big corporation donations, so when we’re in parliament you know we’re serving people, and not vested interests.

“Right now one in three big corporations in Australia pay no tax. We waste billions on dodgy defence deals, handouts to wealthy property investors, and propping up a dying fossil fuel industry but the major parties say there’s no money to raise Centrelink payments to above the poverty line, get dental into Medicare, or wipe student debt.”

Mr Wells is a retail worker who ran on the Greens ticket for the 2021 Alice Springs council by-election, and in last year’s NT election for the seat of Araluen, winning 16.6 per cent of the primary vote.

“As a renter and retail worker, I have experienced first hand the impacts of the cost of living and housing crises faced by hard working Australians,” Mr Wells said.

“I know what it’s like to work two jobs and still worry about rent, and I think that we can do better as a society.

“I’m running for senate with the Greens because I believe that in a wealthy country like ours, everyone should have access to the fundamental basics like a home, food, and access to world class health and education.

“The major parties have lost touch with ordinary working Australians like me. I want to make sure we are represented in the parliament.

“The Territory is on the forefront of the climate crisis, yet our politicians are investing more money in the dying fossil fuel industry instead of on measures to prevent climate change and keep the Territory liveable long into the future.”
