Three Territory teachers have been selected from more than 500 educators across the country to receive professional development and teaching fellowships at the 2024 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards presented by Schools Plus.

Henbury School principal Sarah Corry and Nawarddeken Academy senior teacher Adelaide Ford received teaching fellowships worth $40,000 during the ceremony in Canberra.

The fellowships include $25,000 to fund a strategic school project as well as a 12-month professional development program for coaching and engagement with leading education experts.

Ms Ford hoped the awards shone a spotlight on teachers’ impact and took the opportunity to urge would-be or new teachers to look to remote schools for a fulfilling career.

“It’s an incredible opportunity that you don’t get anywhere else in the country, whether that’s top end of Queensland, Northern Territory, or WA,” she said.

“You get a different side to teaching that you may not get in the cities – you have a different lifestyle and a different relationship with your students and the community... and that’s a really beautiful part of working out bush.”

The Faculty Head for English and Humanities said the award was representative of the mentors and colleagues who had surrounded him over the past five years.

“I’ve just been so fortunate to be in some brilliant schools that have been really focused on school improvement and really driving some improvements in student learning outcomes,” he said.

“I think being in an environment such as that has really helped propel my professional development.

“I’m just an amalgamation of all the fantastic teachers around me, so that makes it extra special.”

As part of his award, Mr Tiwari received a $10,000 scholarship, including a study tour to high performing schools in Australia, an exclusive leadership, learning and mentoring program and $5,000 for professional development of his choosing.
