NT crime: Three teen girls charged after 101-year-old man’s alleged Darwin CBD assault, robbery

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has condemned a “cowardly attack” on a 101 year-old man who was allegedly assaulted and robbed in the heart of Darwin’s CBD.

About 9.30pm on Tuesday evening, the 101-year-old man was travelling on his mobility scooter along Mitchell St when he was allegedly set upon by a trio of teenage girls.

Police say the trio stopped the man and they took his keys and wallet before fleeing the area.

The man suffered lacerations to his arms and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

A short time later, police CCTV operators spotted the alleged offenders at a nearby location.

Police arrested the three teenagers who were aged 14, 15 and 19.

On Wednesday afternoon, the trio were charged with one count each of aggravated robbery, and depriving a person of personal liberty.

They have each been remanded to appear in court on Thursday.

Mrs Finocchiaro slammed the alleged incident, and told the NT News her thoughts were with the victim.

“This is an abhorrent, cowardly attack and my thoughts are with the 101-year-old man who was assaulted,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“No one should feel unsafe on our streets, particularly a senior who was extremely vulnerable using a mobility scooter.

“I thank the police who acted swiftly to catch the three offenders.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Trent Abbott also condemned the act.

“This was a disgraceful attack on a vulnerable member of our society and the actions of these offenders was abhorrent,” he said.

“Thankfully the victim is expected to make a full recovery.”

NT Health on Wednesday afternoon confirmed the man was discharged from Royal Darwin Hospital following treatment.

This masthead understands the man is a well-known face across several cafes and venues along Mitchell St.

Sources close to the victim have told this publication they are aware he was targeted overnight, however they were yet to communicate with him directly.

One of the victim’s close friends said they believed the 101-year-old had also been targeted on Monday evening along the same street.
