Who’s out: Big names drop out of Power 100 list

The Daily Telegraph’s Power 100 reveals dramatic shake-ups as former NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman plummets from the rankings while new faces rise to prominence.

The must read The Daily Telegraph’s Power 100 list is coming out this week and provides a no-holds barred snapshot of who is in and who is out in Sydney right now.

There are plenty of upsets as our journalists delve behind the scenes and go inside the mahogany lined boardrooms to reveal who is really pulling the strings of power in the Emerald City.

One of those plummeting down the list faster than an elevator in Crown Towers is former NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman, who was toppled and replaced by the equally rapidly rising Kellie Sloane.

The other big name to drop out of the list completely is WishTech founder Richard White, who was number 26 last year and nowhere to be seen this year.

Of course that is no surprise but The Daily Telegraph power list takes you behind the scenes to tell you just who the king - and queen - makers are. It is the power behind the throne that is so hard to measure and is brought to you thanks to hours, weeks and years of study along the corridors of power in all walks of life from our specialist journalists.

They look at the very nature of power in Sydney today and consider not just what it looks like but why the people on the list have it or how they have lost it. True power and influence rather than perceived power.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s new wife Jodie Haydon is on the Power 100 list again this year and says she is “honoured” to be there. She has the ear of power.

“My approach has always been to be authentic and to be myself, whether I am in my workplace or supporting Anthony as Prime Minister,” she says in an exclusive interview for the Power 100.

“I will always do my best to use any influence I have to make a positive contribution where I can … I don’t take a second of this opportunity for granted”.

Her ranking on The Power 100 list has risen and her interview helps explain why.

The Daily and weekend Telegraph’s this year combined with the nation’s major retailers to launch the Stop Shop Abuse campaign to end retail violence. Its success in introducing tougher laws lay partly in the power and influence of Federal Attorney-General Michelle Rowland, who added the debate to the agenda for national law makers to consider.

She has made big changes in her first six months in the job including staring down big tech to prevent the use of artificial intelligence to fleece local creators. But she does not take her position for granted and is the epitome of how a spot on the Power 100 list is open to anyone.

“I’m a girl from Blacktown. Lived in Lalor Park. Was fortunate enough to get to university. And I didn’t imagine the first day I walked into law school that one day I would be the Attorney-General of Australia,” she says.

“So I do say to my community, and to schools when I visit them regularly: You can be whatever you want to be if you work hard and you’ve got the right support and determination.”

You could even end up on a list of the most powerful 100 people in Sydney.
