Yes campaign launches new ad

The Yes23 campaign will this weekend return to the commercial TV airwaves for the first time in months with an ad focused on an Aboriginal boy who asks viewers: “Will I live as long as other Australians?”

The new spot, which follows on Uluru Dialogues’ You’re the Voice ad released earlier this month, centres on a child who asks the viewer to contemplate questions designed to draw attention to the statistics of Indigenous disadvantage.

Along with the question about how long he will live, the boy asks “will I get to go to a good school?” and “will I be able to learn my people’s language?”.

He goes on to ask: “Will I be seen beyond the sports field, recognised by the decision-makers of our country?”.

It resolves with the answer-slogan “Yes makes it possible”.

The ad, launched this weekend, is a return to the broadcast TV for the Yes23 campaign during finals football when television ratings are at their highest.

Since the campaign’s Join Us ad released in March, the campaign’s ad spend has been focused on digital and display advertising, and targeted ads on social media.

The ad will run alongside the You’re the Voice spot launched two weeks ago, which is still running across TV and digital platforms.

The new ad comes as the Yes campaign’s major weekend of walks is set to take place in every capital city and in larger regional centres, as thousands of Yes supporters turn out across the country.

Yes23 campaign director Dean Parkin said the ad told a powerful story of the “once-in-a-generation” chance to improve the lives of Indigenous people next month.

“This ad explains to Australians why a successful Yes vote is the best shot we have at tackling the entrenched disadvantage Indigenous people live with,” he said.

“Hope and optimism that the nation can finally come together and make Australia a better, fairer country continues to be at the heart of the Yes campaign.

“As more and more Australians start to tune in, we are explaining to the community that this referendum is simply about recognising the first peoples of this nation, and listening to them so we can better address longstanding problems.

The Yes23 campaign said the commercial would air in all states across the nation, in contrast to the No case’s material, which has tended run extensively only states such as South Australia and Tasmania which are considered to be in play.
