Up to five police have been injured trying to evacuate residents from a unit block which caught fire in western Sydney.

Up to five police have been injured in a unit block fire in western Sydney.

About 5.15pm on Sunday a top floor unit on York St, Fairfield caught fire, with police racing to the scene and beginning to evacuate residents.

It’s believed up to five officers who entered the block suffered smoke inhalation and burns, and were treated at the scene by paramedics.

Three were taken to hospital for assessment and further treatment.

Fifteen residents self-evacuated from the building and there are no reports of any other injuries.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 5.40pm.
