A teenager has been charged with murder after the fatal stabbing of another teen during an alleged after-school confrontation in Sydney’s northwest.

The alleged victim, aged 17, died after he was stabbed in the thigh on Caballo St, Rouse Hill, about 4.20pm on Monday.

Hills Police Area Commander, Superintendent Naomi Moore, confirmed another teenager, a 15-year-old boy, had handed himself in to police just before 7pm on Monday.

Following inquiries, he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Tuesday.

The alleged stabbing occurred near a nature reserve and barbecue area which is adjacent to Rouse Hill High School and near the Ironbark Ridge Public School.

However, Supt Moore said the boy who died was not currently attending school and investigators believed there was no connection to any surrounding schools in the area, which borders Rouse Hill and Beaumont Hills.

Several officers remained at the scene on Tuesday morning, with surrounding streets and the park still taped off.

Shocked students from nearby schools walked past the park, with some slowing down to take a look as staff in high-vis vests guided them away.

One mother, dropping off her two children on Tuesday, told The Daily Telegraph said she was rattled by the news.

“It’s shocking. That’s why I came to bring them today.

“They usually make their own way here.

“The school sent out an email this morning.

“All the kids knew him. They’ve all been messaging each other about it.”

Speaking on ABC radio on Tuesday morning, Supt Moore said “there is no suggestion that there was an argument” prior to the stabbing

“There was a conversation, which has rapidly escalated into a knife being produced and a young boy losing his life,” she said

“I know there were people in the park tried to save him, tried to rescue him.”

“There were a number of female witnesses who I believe were walking through the park ... these females have put their own lives at risk to render aid to this young person.”

Supt Moore described the situation as “tragic” and said it had “impacted the core of the community”.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after witnesses called triple-0, but despite the efforts of paramedics, the injured boy could not be saved.

NSW Police set up an extensive crime scene spanning from Caballo St through to the nearby Bruce Purser Reserve, with locals joined on the scene by specialist detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
