Colourful suits, fascinators, and party shirts dotted the massive crowds at Royal Randwick’s TAB Epsom Day – one of the biggest race days of the nine-week Sydney Everest Carnival calendar.
As the gates opened, racegoers came out of the ticket barriers fast with the Winx and Queen Elizabeth stands packed for the first race.
Those with a grand final ticket had free entry into race day, with Panthers and Storm hats a popular choice by the punters.
Although, wearing the most eye-catching headwear was Stacey Hemera Roberts who donned a ‘peacock-styled’ fascinator and sparkling green outfit.
The milliner, who designed the fascinator herself, said it’s one of the only days where you can “go all out in fashion”.
“It is all about colour and flamboyance and It’s tradition to always get dressed up for the races, and where else can you wear a fabulous hat,” she said.
Ms Hemera Roberts said Epsom Day allowed trackside punters to “push” the fashion boundaries.
Co-host of the ‘We Mean Well’ Podcast Jack Archdale – who completed his outfit with a cowboy hat – said he loves the day, the venue and being so close to the action.
“I’m so excited to be out trackside picking winners, and I’m not talking about snot,” he said.
“This place is unbelievable, it’s crazy what they have done with it.”
Also among the crowd were TV presenters Emma Freedman and Katelyn Mallon and Sydney Roosters stars Sam Walker and Sandon Smith.
Walker and Smith enjoyed their first weekend of their off-season at the races.
“We both enjoy the races, and try to get to them as much as we can and on such a special day like Epsom Day, it’s pretty good to be out here,” Walker said.
Walker is a keen racegoer who plans to spend a chunk of his off-season following his horse ‘Moravia’.
