Sutherland cafe owner proposes to partner live on-air on 2GB
Love was in the air — or should we say, on-air — this morning, when 2GB host Ben Fordham’s morning radio show was derailed by a surprise proposal. Watch the video here.
Radio listeners of 2GB found love was in the air and on-air this morning after the breakfast show was rocked by a surprise proposal.
Host Ben Fordham had brought a Sutherland Shire cafe owner and his partner into the show’s Pyrmont studios this morning as part of a prize promotion being run via the radio station.
But after winning a $20,000 cash prize, The Masonry Cafe owner Brad Callaby decided to take celebrations one step further, getting down on one knee to ask girlfriend Simone Fazzari to marry him.
“I think the first thing I’m going to do is make the mother of my children my wife,” Mr Callaby said.
Listeners heard a short pause and some rustling before Fordham commentated the moment that Mr Callaby supposedly stood up in-studio and got down on one knee.
“Yes, yes, yes,” Ms Fazzari said among giggling and tears.
Fordham then interjected, “Hang on a moment, you better ask the question again so everyone can hear, what’s the question you just asked?”
Mr Callaby followed through, before his partner agreed she would marry him.
Following the special moment, Brad said “she’s only been asking me every day for the last six months,”, as the studio erupted in laughter.
“You’re getting married, oh my gosh we‘ve got a few tears in the studio at the moment,” Fordham added, before congratulating the happy couple.
Champagne and flowers were brought into the studio shortly after for the newly engaged pair, who share two kids together.
Brad told The Daily Telegraph that Simone had a “funny feeling” before jumping on-air this morning.
“She told me this morning that she had this funny feeling in her belly,” he said.
“I was very nervous. It’s been on the highest of my priorities to get engaged.”
The whole studio was aware of the upcoming proposal, and Brad said the nerves kicked in when they were rushed in earlier than expected.
“It was pretty full on. I had no time to think,” Brad said.
“When I spoke to producers the day before, they asked for my wife’s phone number and I said, ‘well actually she’s not my wife, but if I win the $20k, she will be’. It was a last-minute opportunity that I couldn’t say no to.”
The newly-engaged pair are now shopping for a ring and hope to begin planning a wedding.
Fordham told The Daily Telegraph it was “great to see romance unfolding live on radio”.
“We were bracing for one surprise and then we got another one,” he said.
“The look on Simone’s face was priceless.”
