Labor has refused to investigate a complaint lodged about a star candidate, after the former Canberra Raiders star Terry Campese was filmed at a raunchy party dressed nothing but underwear, a tie, and a police hat.
The footage, revealed by The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, showed Labor’s Monaro candidate partying with scantily-clad women whipping each other with sex toys and doing alcohol shots of each other’s bodies.
The party featured a “spanking station” and a “sex swing”. At one point a woman backs into a large dildo stuck to a wall.
Labor Leader Chris Minns on Wednesday said Mr Campese’s behaviour at the party was “distasteful” but “a private matter”.
“That’s the decision that I’ve made as the party leader, it’s a private issue for Mr Campese.”
“Obviously it is embarrassing for him and it is distasteful for many people, but he’s been transparent about it, and it happened before he was a Labor candidate,” Mr Minns said.
“Voters will make up their own minds about the appropriateness or otherwise of it,” he said.
The footage was the basis of a complaint lodged with party head office last month.
However Sussex Street has dropped any investigation because the complainant was not a party member.
“It was a complaint made by a member of the public who was concerned about the appropriateness of the video. The video was tracked down by the New South Wales party office determined it was a private matter for Mr Campese.”
In the video a barely clothed woman sucks alcohol off his body at the raunchy affair.
The controversial video comes amid a messy divorce battle between Mr Campese and his former wife.
A video seen by the Telegraph, that was shared on social media and is believed to have been filmed last year — shows the party had a “spank station”, women whipping each other with sex toys and bondage toys hanging off the trees.
It features footage of someone grabbing a woman’s bum, a woman spreading her legs on a sex swing and another woman backing into a dildo stuck to the wall.
The video also captures Mr Campese’s face on a woman’s breasts as she is sprawled on the floor.
The footage was the basis of a complaint lodged with a senior party official over the phone on January 10 according to internal emails obtained by the Telegraph.
When the Telegraph asked Labor Leader Chris Minns’ office on February 3 about a complaint about Mr Campese’s conduct, they said no formal complaint had been received.
“There was a misunderstanding about the original information request, once that was clarified, responses were provided,” a spokesman said.
“NSW Labor has reviewed the video and determined there is no further action required.
“It is a private matter for Terry Campese.”
The complainant said they were concerned that the activities shown in the publicly available footage were not suitable for a person vying for a seat in the state’s parliament.
They said the official responded by saying the complaint would be taken to a committee and investigated but no updates have been provided since.
Labor denied that this was said.
An email sent to the complainant on January 10 said a party official was happy to speak about the concerns on a “confidential basis”.
Mr Campese was contacted for comment.
