Pleasant autumn days ahead for Sydney as powerful swells continue to lash NSW coastline

After weeks of rain and grey skies, Sydney is finally set to enjoy a string of sunny, mild autumn days — but authorities are warning beachgoers and boaters to steer clear of the water as large, hazardous surf continues to pound the coast.

Sydney is set to bask in a run of pleasant autumn weather with sunny skies and daily tops of 20C forecast through the weekend, following weeks of persistent rainfall and cloudy conditions.

But while the skies are clearing, the swell remains large and powerful.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Hazardous Surf Warning through to Saturday night, with large and powerful waves continuing to batter the NSW coastline from Byron Bay to Eden.

“Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming,” the Bureau warned on Thursday.

The warning covers key beach regions including the Sydney, Illawarra, Hunter and Batemans coasts, with particularly dangerous conditions forecast on Thursday and Saturday. A Strong Wind Warning has also been issued for the Sydney Coast.

NSW Police and Marine Rescue are urging people to stay out of the water and off rocks exposed to the surf, advising boaters to reconsider any bar crossings or offshore trips.

Surfline has reported powerful swells of 10-15ft (3-4 metres) hitting Maroubra Beach in Sydney’s east on Thursday. Conditions are expected to ease slightly on Friday with waves in the 5-7ft range, before settling at a consistent 3-4ft over the weekend — offering ideal conditions for experienced surfers.

Despite the rough seas, the city itself is in for a much calmer stretch of weather.

After a mostly cloudy Thursday and a chance of a light coastal shower, Sydneysiders can look forward to mostly sunny skies from Friday through Monday, with mild temperatures between 19C and 21C and light winds. Morning fog is possible in the outer west each day.

By Tuesday, a slight chance of showers returns, but conditions will remain relatively stable with a high of 21C.
