With an ad they’re calling the “the closer”, the No campaign plans to blanket airwaves in the key battleground state of South Australia starting on Sunday night.
News Corp has been given an advance peek at the ad, which was filmed predominantly in Adelaide, and finishes with Senator Jacinta Price and former Liberal candidate Warren Mundine on the Glenelg Pier.
It’s the first time the pair have appeared together in the No campaign’s advertising material and will be the last TV ad the campaign releases before polling day on October 14.
The decision to focus the final push on South Australia was made months ago by the No campaign strategists, who were already convinced that Western Australia and Queensland would be in the bag by this time in the campaign.
The message of the TV spot is that rather than being a divisive act against Aboriginal Australians, a vote against the Voice is in fact a vote for Australian unity.
In addition to the prominent Indigenous opponents of the Voice, the ad also features ordinary Aboriginal people expressing their worries that a successful Yes vote will create more division in the country rather than less.
A No campaign spokesmen said: “We have known right from the start that Indigenous voices expressing concern about division would be critical when Australians came decide their vote”.
He also said the decision to focus on South Australia, a state which does not usually feature in national advertising campaigns, served to underline its importance.
“Our message to South Australians is that their vote may well decide the fate of the referendum, and we will seek to blanket the state with advertising until referendum day, hoping they will vote against the voice of division.”
The ad will also run online in other states, but in the more expensive media markets of NSW and Victoria the No campaign is mainly relying on its social media presence to get its message out.
A recent survey of the top 10 TikTok videos about the referendum nationally revealed the Fair Australia and No campaign held the first five and seven out of the top 10 in numbers of views.
The success of the No campaign at colonising the social media channels favoured by voters has frustrated the Yes23 campaign, which had expected to win younger voters.
