A historic Sydney suburb is one step closer to receiving the road it has waited more than 60 years for, with the Minns government awarding a construction contract for the $100 million Pitt Town bypass.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure will start work on the 950 metre bypass, two new roundabouts and a bridge in northwestern Sydney in the coming months.

More than 10,000 vehicles drive on the current road every day, with traffic volumes expected to increase by 40 per cent in coming years.

Once completed, the bypass will slash the number of trucks driving through the town centre and reduce travel times, especially between Windsor and Wisemans Ferry.

The upgrade to the road network will also enhance flood resilience for local residents by improving traffic flow and road safety in and around Pitt Town, which will be vital for future emergency evacuations in the flood-prone region bounded by the Hawkesbury River.

Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said the project is expected to open in late 2026 and will cut congestion across the booming region.

“As the North West of Sydney continues to grow, it is essential that local communities have reliable infrastructure,” she said.

“With the selection of the successful contractor, residents will soon be able to look forward to less congestion through the village and having a safer alternative for travel between Pitt Town and Wisemans Ferry.

Upper House member for Hawkesbury Peter Primrose welcomed the major milestone.

“A Pitt Town bypass has been talked about for more than six decades,” Mr Primrose said.

“It’s good to see the time for talk is over and the Minns Labor Government is delivering this vital piece of infrastructure for the people of Pitt Town.”

While Federal Macquarie MP Susan Templeman said the project would transform the region following years of local advocacy for the bypass with the Pitt Town Progress Association.

“I can say the Minns government has made a huge difference, committing and then delivering the funding needed to get this project moving,” she said.
