The mother of a young boy who died in a freak beach accident has bravely revealed the child’s proudest moment just days before his death, as she thanked the people who fought so hard to save him.
Kaison Greaves, 9, died on Easter Sunday after becoming stuck in a crevice while playing happily on a family holiday at South West Rocks, on the state’s mid north coast.
A multi-agency rescue operation involving police, paramedics, the NSW Fire Brigade and Surf Life Savers worked for more than two hours to try and free the boy, but he died at the scene from massive internal injuries.
In a raw letter to the local community and the hundreds of people who rallied to support them since Kaison’s death, Brook Greaves said she took comfort in knowing rescuers did everything they could to try and save her precious son.
“To each and every one of those involved in trying to save our boy, we are so forever grateful that he was not alone in his last moments and we know you did everything you could,” Mrs Greaves wrote.
“David and I would like to express our deepest gratitude from the bottom of our broken hearts for everything that was done for our family.”
“We could have stood on that beach all night with you hugging and absorbing everyone’s love and kindness”.
Mrs Greaves said it was only days before his death that Kaison experienced his “proudest moment”, when he mastered the Treetops climbing adult course “all by himself”.
The Brisbane-based family, who were visiting their annual holiday destination, said the tragedy won’t keep them away.
“While we navigate life without him, please know that you have turned a place of sorrow for us, into a place of love, and we will never forget what you have done to help us.”
“We will be back when we have the strength. For now, hold your loved ones close and tell them you love them every moment you get,” Mrs Greaves wrote.
NSW Police said a report was being prepared for the coroner, but that Kaison’s death was a tragic accident and one of six fatalities at NSW beaches across easter.
