A Port Macquarie man has appeared in court charged with accessing child abuse material and attempting to destroy evidence after an FBI tip-off sparked raids between the Mid-North Coast and Sydney.

An FBI tip-off about Australian users accessing a dark net site containing child abuse material led to the charging of Marc Bernard Conyard, 64.

He appeared at Port Macquarie Local Court on Wednesday after being charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Child Protection Operations team on 6 November.

In July 2025 police raided a Denistone East, Sydney home, allegedly linking Conyard to an account accessing the dark web site.

Police allege that when they executed a second warrant at a Port Macquarie address, Conyard had attempted to delete files and destroy hard drives, but forensic experts recovered child abuse material.

AFP Detective Superintendent Luke Needham said law enforcement remained committed to protecting children and prosecuting anyone involved in their harm.

“Anyone thinking of producing, accessing or sharing material that depicts the exploitation or abuse of children should be warned that they cannot hide behind online anonymity,” Det Supt Needham said.

Conyard was granted conditional bail on 6 November, which continues.

He is charged with using a carriage etc to access child abuse material and destroying/rendering illegible evidence in federal proceeding with no pleas entered at this stage.

The matter returns to Port Macquarie Local Court on 22 January 2026.
