NSW Premier Chris Minns has confirmed the family of legendary broadcaster John Laws has accepted the offer of a state funeral, which will be held on November 19 at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney.

Laws, who passed away at his Sydney home on Sunday aged 90 after a long illness, was one of Australia’s most influential radio figures, with a career spanning more than seven decades.

Premier Minns said the service, set for 1.30pm next Wednesday, will be an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the enormous contribution Laws made to Australian media and broadcasting.

A statement from Mr Minns said: “Laws was a towering figure in Australian radio whose voice resonated across the nation.

“John’s career was extraordinary. Few broadcasters have left such a deep and lasting mark on Australian media.

“Beginning in 1953 at Bendigo’s 3BO and later becoming a household name on Sydney stations such as 2UE and 2SM, his distinctive tone earned him the affectionate title ‘Golden Tonsils’.”

“On behalf of the NSW Government, I extend my deepest condolences to John’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who listened, learned and were challenged by him.

“His legacy lies not only in the thousands of hours on air, but in the connection he forged with millions of Australians.”

More details on the State Funeral will be available in the coming days online at NSW Government State Services.

After news broke of his death, tributes flowed from a who’s who of Australia - from politicians, to actors and fellow media personalities
