Homeward bound: Aussies return from Israel amid Iran war

More than 100 Australians and their family members are on their way home from Israel after Australian Defence Force personnel and diplomats helped their flight leave Tel Aviv late on Tuesday night.

More than 100 Australians and their family members are on their way home from Israel after Australian Defence Force personnel and diplomats helped their flight leave Tel Aviv late on Tuesday night.

Prior to the departure of the flight carrying 119 Australians, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said about 3000 more were in Iran and about 1000 others were in Israel waiting to come home.

Air space in Israel has now opened and Israeli commercial airlines have resumed operation for anyone wanting to leave Israel.

The federal government has encouraged travellers with existing tickets for cancelled flights are encouraged to keep speaking with airlines.

Consular officers remained positioned at the Iran-Azerbaijan border to assist departing Australians.
