A police investigation is underway after a former high-ranking Comanchero bikie was stabbed and bashed in prison.

Mohamad ‘Mick’ Hijazi, 47, was attacked by a 22-year-old rival prisoner at the maximum security Shortland Correctional Centre in the Upper Hunter on Sunday, August 15.

It is understood Hijazi — who was once the head of the Comanchero’s south Sydney chapter — was “jumped” by the younger inmate about 9.30am, punched in the head and stabbed with a makeshift blade.

Hijazi was driven to John Hunter Hospital by ambulance with a Correctional Services NSW escort.

After spending several hours in hospital in Newcastle he was returned to the prison that same day.

In a statement, Corrective Services NSW said the “22-year-old inmate was placed in segregation”.

So far no charges have been laid but NSW police confirmed they were aware of the incident and are now investigating.

“Hunter Valley Police are investigating after an alleged assault between two male inmates at a correctional facility in the Hunter on Sunday, August 15 2021,” a NSW police spokesperson said.

Hijazi is serving a minimum of 13 months jail after pleading guilty to possessing a pistol and possessing a prohibited weapon.

His solicitor Rayan Kadadi described the attack on him as “cowardly” and said she was disappointed that a prisoner with a profile like his had not been re-located after such an attack.

“Jail is jail, but it seems to have been quite a cowardly act on him. There is no doubt that extra caution should have been taken by Corrective Services with an inmate like him,” she said.

“It is concerning that despite this attack on my client, corrective bodies have done nothing to have him re-located and that is just not good enough.”

Earlier this year he was slapped with a serious crime prevention order by police over his alleged links to high-ranking bikies including Mark Buddle and Ali Bazzi.

But with Hijazi now behind bars that SCPO was revoked by police earlier this month.

After his current sentence is served, Hijazi is expected to be extradited over to Western Australia where he is wanted to face serious offences.
