Bail has been denied for a man after he allegedly told cops he was going to get a knife and hovered near an axe – in behaviour described by a magistrate as “akin to siege mentality”.
Dylan Tyler, 34, applied for bail over charges of assault and damaging property but it was his alleged behaviour on police arrival that really heightened concerns.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Prasad told the court when police attended a callout, Tyler said “I’m going to get a knife” and he was “hovering around an axe”.
Mr Prasad told the court he opposed the bail application for the alleged victim’s sake and the community’s protection.
Tyler was defended by solicitor Grant Slowgrove who proposed to the court that Tyler could stay outside of Lake Cathie if granted bail.
Mr Slowgrove also told the court the man suffers epilepsy and has a “serious psychotic disorder” and requires medical treatment through daily tablets and monthly injections.
He said his client had not offended since 2015.
Magistrate Karen Stafford said court documents showed “very concerning facts of a serious nature”.
“He was going towards a knife and a taser” when police arrived on scene on Monday, Ms Stafford said.
Tyler is charged with two counts of common assault and destroying or damaging property valued less than $2000. No pleas have been entered.
He was refused bail on Tuesday in Bail Division Court 1.
He is due to face court in Port Macquarie on July 23 where it is expected he will enter pleas.
