Brad Bowtell, referred to as the ‘face of the Nomads’ bikie group in the NSW Hunter dies

Brad Bowtell, who had long been one of the faces of the Nomads OMCG and was a key face in the gang’s war with the Finks that raged across the Hunter in 2018, has died following a suspected medical episode.

Bikies in Australia: A short history

A high-ranking Nomads bikie has died after suffering what is believed to have been a medical episode at his Singleton home.

Brad Bowtell had long been one of the faces of the Nomads OMCG and was a key face in the gang’s war with the Finks OMCG that raged across the Hunter region in 2018.

But the heavily-tattooed former Nomads president collapsed suddenly at his home on Madden Parade in Singleton Heights about 11.30am on Sunday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics made it to Bowtell’s home and rushed him to hospital, but he did not survive.

Underworld sources said the 40-year-old’s death was a major loss for the club on both a personal, and a business level.

“He has essentially been the face of the Nomads in Newcastle for a decade, controlling everything and bringing boys in,” they said.

“This will be a devastating for them.”

Bowtell made headlines during the violent spree of tit-for-tat attacks between the Finks and Nomads, that included his home being targeted in a drive-by attack.

Rarely used serious crime prevention orders (SCPOs) were taken out by NSW Police against he and other members of both bikie gangs in the Hunter Region.

Several members were also charged and convicted of participating in a criminal group.

Bowtell opened up on how he joined the Nomads while being sentenced over those charges in the NSW District Court.

The Newcastle arm of the court heard that when he joined in 2014 he had no criminal record and was enticed by the lure of a flashier life, including being surrounded by pretty women.

“I was approached by some members of the club at the gym over a number of weeks, into months,” Bowtell said.

“They kept approaching me in regards to hanging around with them and going to social events.

“From there they sort of put it in front of me, joining. They painted a picture that it was sort of going to be a good thing to do, which it ended up not being.”

Bowtell said he quickly rose through the ranks thanks largely to his imposing physical figure.
