Bondi Junction massacre inquest: Hero police officer Amy Scott and ‘Bollard men’ to give evidence

Bondi Junction mass killer Joel Cauchi told a doctor he wanted a psychiatric review for “medical fitness” so he could visit a gun range and practice target shooting, the inquest into the Bondi Junction massacre has heard. Follow updates here.

Heroes of the Bondi Junction Massacre

Bondi Junction mass killer Joel Cauchi was without supervision for his chronic schizophrenia for five years before he killed six innocent victims in a stabbing rampage at Bondi Junction Westfields, an inquest has heard.

On the opening day of a five-week coronial inquest, counsel assisting Dr Peggy Dwyer, SC told the court a “floridly psychotic” Cauchi made notes about checking out malls and “where to run” in the weeks leading up to his deadly rampage.

Another note was a reminder to “call knife sharpener and confirm it doesn’t need sharpening for mall use”. His Google history included searches for serial killers, mass stabbings and shootings and the Columbine killers.

Hero cop Inspector Amy Scott, who the court heard “confronted Mr Joel Cauchi and shot him as he was armed and running towards her at speed”, will be called for evidence on Tuesday, as will French construction workers Silas Desperaux and Damien Guerot, who helped Inspector Scott find Cauchi and were “witnesses to the eventual shooting of Mr Cauchi”.

Haunting CCTV footage captured the moment Mr Guerot stood at the top of an escalator brandishing a bollard, just metres away from a knife-wielding Cauchi.
