Sky News host Erin Molan has landed on the latest Russian government “stop list”, which bans specified people from entering Russia.
The Daily Telegraph columnist joins 131 Australians on the ever-growing list, including NSW Corrections Minister Anoulack Chanthivong and former Liberal defence minister Christopher Pyne.
“This is a new honour bestowed upon me, a badge of honour if you will,” Molan told Confidential.
“Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine is abhorrent and I will always speak up for those in Ukraine in this unjust war.”
Asked about his entry on the “stop” list, Mr Pyne said: “It’s a red letter day when you are black banned for loving liberty over tyranny.”
Others named include Australian Defence Force members, weapons manufacturing company staff, journalists and public servants.
Released by the Russian Foreign Ministry this week, the document declared those on the list as having been identified as “anti-Russian citizens of Australia” who would face “personal sanctions”.
“Considering that official Canberra does not intends to abandon anti-Russian course and continues to introduce new ones sanctions measures, work on updating the Russian stop list will continue,” the English translation of the document declared.
The list is the latest in a series the Russian government has released since Australia imposed sanctions on Moscow after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Last April, the list included former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews and Animal Justice Party MP Georgia Purcell.
In June, more names were added, including former prime ministers Tony Abbott and John Howard.
Molan’s entry is hardly surprising given her strong statements against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine.
When the June list was released, Molan – who has described the war between Russia and Ukraine as no better example of “good vs evil” – took to the airways to “congratulate Howard and Abbott” for making the cut.
“For what you might ask? Condemning an illegal invasion of a sovereign state? Absolutely,” Ms Molan said on Sky.
“I can only praise their inclusion and hope many more Australians are bestowed a similar honour.”
Given her ongoing commentary, it is surprising it took the Kremlin this long to add Molan to its list.
