Music’s biggest names hit the ARIA Awards red carpet in a parade of looks that were anything but quiet.
There was plenty of “rock black”, while bold colours, sharp silhouettes, unapologetically loud and boundary-pushing couture set the scene at the 39th annual ARIA Awards that took place at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion complex on Wednesday.
British singing superstar Olivia Dean jetted in for the event, as did American country music starlet Kacey Musgragves, who put on a leggy display in a cream embellished corset and lace bloomers by Georges Hobeika, paired with Rene Caovilla heels.
Lennox Heads-based Kita Alexander turned heads in a custom sheer Lola Varma white dress and said her Best Pop Release nomination felt surreal.
“I am really excited. It feels like an out of body experience right now. I am up against Kylie Minogue.”
Ninajirachi, Amyl and the Sniffers, Emma Memma, The Wiggles, Keli Holiday, Dom Dolla, Thelma Plum, G Flip, BARKAA, Missy Higgins and Baker Boy were among the other major names to walk the ruby rug at Australian music’s big night.
Vera Blue turned heads in a creative black cosseted Gail Sorronda mini dress.
“When it comes to my outfit, it is always about being inspired by what my music is doing,” she told Confidential.
“I feel like at the moment my music is a little bit gothic and a little bit darker, so I like to go into that realm.”
Beloved Aussie country music star Fanny Lumsden got creative, making her two-piece ensemble from scratch and told Confidential about her most memorable ARIA’s moment.
“Two years ago Dolly Parton announced my name when I won. and I just couldn’t speak. My mouth was wide open,” she said.
Wiggles members John Pearce – wearing Venroy and Prada – and Tsehay Hawkins, dressed in a custom top and skirt made by her mother, were just happy to be nominated for Best Children’s Album, which went to Emma Memma.
“We are always excited and grateful we are nominated,” Pearce said.
“If we win an award, great, but we make music for children, so as long a the children and fmaililes are happy, that’s the main thing.”
Girl of the moment, Ninajirachi, who was up for eight gongs, said the last few months had been “a whirlwind”.
“My album only came out a few month ago, a lot of things have happened very quickly. It is crazy. This is my first time doing any of this, but I am with some of my friends I have know for along time and my team and I couldn’t do it without them. It has been really fun.”
Adam Hyde (aka Keli Holiday) arrived on the arm of his TV personality partner, Abbie Chatfield – who was wearing a unique custom check corset style dress by Nicola Louise.
“He is the one,” she said when asked if marriage was on the cards for the high profile pair.
“I send my sister wedding dresses sometimes because she is a fashion designer … So we are at that level.”
