An aquatic take on the hit TV series Top Gear has been filming at Penrith Whitewater Stadium with Olympic gold medallist Noemie Fox and TV presenter Grant Denyer taking on the elements in the adventure program.
Eagle-eyed visitors recently spotted the slalom kayak star with the Deal or No Deal presenter, and other cast members of the show TopKnotz, in the same vessel as they confronted the rapids on the 320m man-made course at the foot of the mountains.
A visitor captured Fox at the front of the vessel and Denyer (wearing blue) in the middle as they battled the obstacle while being filmed for the Channel 9 program.
In a promo for the program, Denyer says viewers can expect a wave of entertainment “on the water, over and through the water for a whole world of aquatic adventure”.
Production company RJ Media – which specialises in marine content and produced the America’s Cup and Sydney to Hobart yacht races – is behind the show which is shot using 4K Red cameras “and a fleet of drones by some of the most awarded marine cinematographers found in the world both above and below the water line”.
TV personality Tom Williams and former NRL star Andrew Ettingshausen are also set to appear on the show which, along with extreme sports, includes something for keen anglers.
Being a member of Western Sydney Whitewater Club, Fox is right at home on the rapids.
The 27-year-old star ascended at last year’s Paris Olympics in the women’s slalom kayak cross when she became the first-ever Olympic champion in that event.
Whitewater Stadium is also familiar for Noemi’s older sister and three-time Olympic gold medallist Jessica. They were raised in Blaxland and are known as Penrith’s Golden Girls.
In December, Penrith Council awarded Jessica the key to the city, following years of accomplishments, at a civic ceremony honouring 17 Olympians and Paralympians with a local connection.
Penrith Mayor Todd Carney is not surprised local destinations have been chosen for the small and big screen, following post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max: Fury Road and several TV commercials.
“Penrith has long been regarded as a destination for adventure, so it’s no surprise that media companies are filming in our city,’’ he said.
“We are home to some unique adventure attractions like iFly indoor skydiving, Cables Wake Park, Jetpack Adventures and of course Penrith Whitewater Stadium where the 2000 Olympics played host to the canoe and kayak slalom events.
“We welcome and can accommodate all types of productions.”
