Licensing fees have been slashed for Territorians, in a move the Treasurer is spruiking as part of the “final sweep” of cost of living measures for the NT.

Speaking in Alice Springs on Tuesday, Territory Treasurer Bill Yan said starting on New Year’s Day, 112,000 Territorians who need to renew their licence within a certain period will be able to get it done for free.

“(From) the 1st of January until June, anyone whose licence is being renewed in that period will automatically receive a 12 month discount,” he said.

“People who are not getting their licence renewed can come into motor vehicle registry or go onto MVR Quickpay and get a renewal of their licence with that 12 month extension to their licences.”

Those who needed a new photo would be required to go to the MVR in person, Mr Yan said.

Mr Yan said the initiative was born out of “talking to people out in public” who said “one of those things about cost of living was licences and vehicle registration”.

“So we made that commitment coming into the 2024 election to do that 12 month freeze on regos but also provide that one year free driver’s licence to help ease that cost of living further,” he said.

The announcement is one part of a series of steps the CLP government took to shake up MVR fees, which began in November.

The first step saw rego fees for cars, motorbikes, and trailers frozen until July 2026.

Secondly, the CLP announced a new trailer registration scheme, where punters could register light trailers (less than 750 kgs) for a period of up to three years.

Mr Yan said the three part shake-up was all the government had planned for MVR fees, but noted the CLP’s small business tax reform kicked off from January 1st as well.
