Serious vehicle crash in Berry Springs, Northern Territory

July 16: A man has died after the vehicle he was driving rolled in Berry Springs on Tuesday afternoon, marking a grim milestone for the Northern Territory road toll.

Hopewell Road in Berry Springs was closed to all traffic following the serious single vehicle crash occured at 2.13pm.

Just before 6pm, NT Police confirmed a 73-year-old man, the single occupant of a white, Toyota HiLux utility, died after becoming trapped when the vehicle rolled and came to a rest on its room.

They said police, along with fireys and St John Amblance crews attended the scene but sadly the man was declared deceased upon their arrival.

A crime scene has been established as police investigate what caused the crash.

Traffic diversions were in place on Hopewell Road, though police expected the scene to be cleared before sundown

Police said the factors contributing to the cause of the crash were not yet known.

The vehicle was travelling southbound when the crash occured, and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage from vehicles travelling in the Berry Springs area to call 131 444 and quote reference number P24190952.

Darwin Traffic Operations has carriage of the incident, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

The Lives Lost on Territory Roads in 2024 now stands at 35 compared to seven at the same time last year.

Man turns himself in after alleged hit and run

July 16: A man has been arrested after he turned himself in to police in relation to an alleged hit and run.

Northern Watch Commander Brendan Molloy said the 36-year-old man allegedly struck a pedestrian on Emery Ave, Gray, at 11.32pm Monday.

Sergeant Molloy alleged the man continued driving, but contacted police a short time later to identify himself and his location.

He said the man allegedly returned a positive roadside breath test and his vehicle was seized for forensic testing.

Sergeant Molloy said the man would likely be charged with a range of offences, including high range drink driving.

He said paramedics and police also attended the scene where the pedestrian had been struck and established a crime scene.

Sergeant Molloy said the 20-year-old woman suffered a significant head injury.

He said St John NT took the woman to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

Teenage boy in custody after man falls from ute tray in Gunn Point

July 15: A 17-year-old boy is in custody after another teenager was rushed to hospital after falling from the bed of a ute in Gunn Point on Sunday night.

An NT Police spokesman said emergency services were alerted to the 19-year-old’s fall at about 6.40pm, alleging the Toyota HiLux was being “driven erratically” along Gunn Point Beach.

“Palmerston general duties officers and St John Ambulance attended the scene where the man was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment via CareFlight after suffering injuries to his leg,” he said.

“The vehicle fled the scene prior to police arrival.”

Officers from the Darwin traffic operations unit found the HiLux in McMinns Lagoon on Monday and arrested the 17-year-old who is “in custody assisting police with inquiries”.
