DARWIN CBD’s State Square continues to be upgraded with the NT Government releasing $30m in funding to rip up a carpark and green the area.

The patch of dirt where the Chan building once stood will be landscaped and the carpark near the underground carpark will be ripped up.

The $30m in funding forms part of the $200m Darwin City Deal.

Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler said between $40 and $50m of the City Deal budget had been spent, which included development of the Charles Darwin University education centre on Cavenagh St.

“We want this job done, we want Territorians to be able to use this space,” she said.

“I can’t wait to see this area grassed at the Chan building, it has gone on too long, I’d love to see it all done.

The $30m will also fund a detailed design and constructions tenders going out to market; documentation, approvals and staged work packages for the delivery of the Civic and State Square Masterplan over the next five years; and consultation with all key stakeholders in the design development.
