NT Police have charged a Darwin woman found with 56kg of cannabis split across four suitcases in her vehicle on Monday.

Police apprehended the 45-year-old woman while she was travelling on the Stuart Highway in Pinelands, after leaving a hotel in Palmerston on Monday morning.

The vehicle was subject to a search, locating four suitcases containing a combined total of 56kg of cannabis.

The woman was arrested at the location and later charged with possessing and supplying a commercial quantity of a schedule 2 substance.

She was remanded to appear in Local Court on Tuesday.
