UPDATE 11AM: A MAN who allegedly threatened two people with a handgun in the Narrows on Sunday night will face court for the first time on Wednesday.

Peter McParland, 57, was due to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday but had his case abruptly adjourned due to Covid-19 protocols at Holtze Prison.

McFarland has been charged with aggravated assault, drug possession, possessing a firearm without a licence and failing to meet storage requirements.

He will now return to court on Wednesday.

UPDATE TUESDAY: A 57-YEAR-OLD man is accused of threatening two people with a handgun in a tense standoff in Darwin.

NT Police have charged the man for firearms and drug offences following the Sunday night incident at The Narrows.

Police were called to Shiers St at 11pm following reports of an altercation.

The 57-year-old allegedly assaulted a 28-year-old man before threatening him and a 30-year-old man with a handgun.

On Monday Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said police negotiated a surrender plan with the armed man.

“So that arrest effected quite safely, we recovered the firearm,” Mr Chalker said.

The 57-year-old has been charged with aggravated assault, making threats with a firearm, possessing a firearm while unlicensed, failure to meet storage requirements and possession of a trafficable quantity of a schedule 2 drug.

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Tuesday.

EARLIER: AN ALLEGED gun wielding man has been arrested in a night standoff in Darwin.

NT Police Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Kaye Pemberton said a 57-year-old man was arrested after allegedly threatening people with a handgun at 10.50pm on Sunday at The Narrows.

Sgt Pemberton said the man was arrested without incident, and the matter was still under investigation.

She said the man was expected to be charged with aggravated assault, weapons and drug possession charges.

Sgt Pemberton alleged the man was not the holder of a gun licence, and the origins of the gun was under investigation. Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said police worked with the 57-year-old to co-ordinate a surrender plan.

“So that arrest was effected quite safely, we recovered the firearm.”
