The Tiwi Islands football grand finals did not disappoint, treating thousands of visiting fans to two thrilling matches of skilful, high energy footy.
Tiwi grand final day is a known bucket list event for any footy lover with the passion and intensity of the fans matching the skills and pace of the players on field at Wurrumiyanga Oval.
The Muluwurri Magpies women were able to bounce back from last year’s grand final defeat with a resounding 11.7 (73) to 3.5 (23) win against the Walamala Bulldogs.
The Magpies dominated the contest from the opening siren and were best served by Hilda Moreen who booted four goals across the match.
Tiwi Bombers regular Freda Puruntatameri added two to the side’s tally while Arthurina Moreen got the crowd cheering with a fantastic effort out of the ruck kicking a 50m stunner on the run.
However, the Magpies counterparts weren’t as fortunate in the men’s match up despite coming off an undefeated season.
Instead the Imalu Tigers, who had only lost to the Magpies all year had the weight of chances in their favour and took the 14.10 (94) to 12.6 (78) win.
Cecil Puruntatameri was the star of the show with seven goals to his name, including three in the final quarter where the ledger was four goals to three.
