Tennant Creek Speedway Club has been the victim of “senseless destruction” once again, after the locks on its canteen were “smashed” and a door set alight just days before its opening weekend.

In a post, the Speedway Club said the damage was a “kick in the guts” for the hard work the community had put in to getting the facilities ready for the opening weekend.

“Just replaced these doors from the last break in and now they decide to burn it down instead. “Smashed the new locks off and set the door alight.

“Luckily we all headed out there for a meeting today to try make sure everything was in order, only to discover the door alight.

“Cannot thank the police and fireys enough for their quick response.

“Senseless destruction once again.”

The club said it would “not be defeated” and would continue racing on the weekend.

The latest break-in comes less than a month after “every single one” of the toilets and walls in the clubs ablution block was smashed in.

Tennant Creek Speedway president Bradley Shadforth said at the time that damage to its facilities was ongoing, and it was looking for a permanent caretaker to deter offenders from breaking into the property.

“It’s almost every year we’ve got to be replacing things and fixing things,” Mr Shadforth said.

“We’re mainly just heartbroken really, and a it’s lot of work we have to do for no reason.”

The community rallied together, with local businesses T&J and Barkly plumbing offering to fix walls and plumbing, alongside members of the community coming together in a working bee to repair the damage.

Last year, the speedway had to cancel meetings after a break-in caused about $10,000 worth of damage to the club’s canteen.
