A SOUTHERNER caught one of the biggest marlin at this year’s three-day Billfish Classic.
Joel Bassett and Ashley Harris flew up from Melbourne to fish with mate Damon Michael.
The three friends caught three fish, with Mr Bassett’s black marlin the biggest, at 170kg.
“He definitely has the bragging rights,” Mr Michael’s wife Samantha said. “Damon goes down there to go fishing and hunting with the boys, and as soon as we moved to Darwin they said they were coming up here to fish in the tournament.”
The tournament was held in ideal conditions, with champion team Meg II catching nine billfish in three days. Mrs Michael said the three mates, in the tournament for the first time, finished a way off from the winners.
“They didn’t win, but they reckon they caught the biggest fish,” she said. “We’ve just moved to Darwin from Alice Springs, so Damon will be out fishing a lot more and I think the boys will be up visiting from Melbourne pretty often.”
