A popular recreation area has been closed after reports of a large saltwater crocodile in the water.

Manton Dam was closed off by NT Parks and Wildlife on Thursday after a member of the public reported seeing a suspected 3m crocodile.

Parks and Wildlife staff shut the gates to the Dam at the Stuart Highway to restrict access.

A spokesperson said NT Parks and Wildlife were conducting three night surveys to locate the crocodile, and that the first survey undertaken on Thursday did not confirm the presence of a saltwater crocodile.

“Three permanent traps are located at Manton Dam, they are baited and checked weekly,” the spokesperson said.

“Night surveys are carried out monthly.”

The spokesperson went on to say Manton Dam would be reopened when it was deemed safe for public use.
