Katherine man sentenced on child abuse material and drug related charges
A Katherine man originally reported by United States authorities for possessing hundreds of files of child abuse material has been sentenced. Read what happened.
A Katherine man has been sentenced after being found with hundreds of files of child abuse material as well as cannabis at his home.
Initial reports of the man possessing child abuse material came from the United States’ National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children after finding the material stored in his online accounts.
Police charged the man on June 20, 2024, after a search of his home revealed electronic devices, including a SD card, containing hundreds of files of child abuse material, as well as a quantity of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.
The 44-year-old man pleaded guilty on November 21, 2025, to possessing child abuse material, possessing a schedule two drug and possessing thing to administer dangerous drug.
He was sentenced on December 4 in the Katherine Local Court to three years and six months behind bars, with a non-parole period of one year and nine months backdated to June 20, 2024.
AFP Superintendent Greg Davis said demand for child abuse material fuelled the horrific exploitation and abuse of children.
“Our dedicated investigators are committed to protecting children and will track alleged offenders wherever they may be and bring them before the courts,” he said.
“The AFP’s partnerships with law enforcement agencies locally, nationally and internationally are vital to disrupt insidious child abuse offending.”
NT Police Detective Sergeant Mark Cronin said offenders would be held accountable for child abuse related crimes.
“These offences are despicable and have no place in our community,” he said.
“This serves as a reminder to anyone participating in these horrendous acts, we will find you and you will be held accountable.”
