Iconic luxury accommodation, El Questro, loses $1M in one month due to Covid-19 lockdowns

ICONIC luxury accommodation business El Questro is offering discounted prices to Territory travellers after losing more than $1m in revenue over the past month due to Covid-19 lockdowns.

The Kimberley homestead, owned by the G’day Group, is usually booked out months in advance but staff have been answering countless requests from travellers, particularly from NSW, to cancel their bookings after strict lockdowns.

G’day Group chief operations officer Matt Lang said it had been “an incredibly tough 18 months for the Kimberley”.

“When we took over El Questro in April, the property had been closed for almost two years,” he said.

“El Questro relies heavily on international travellers and while Covid had given us a handicap, we were looking ahead to a near sold out 2021 season.

“Sadly, due to the Covid situation on the east coast, we’ve lost more than $1m in revenue this month.

“The impact is being felt across the whole Kimberley Region, with guests to our property making bookings with tour guides and other local businesses.

“The Kimberley was all but closed down this time last year due to Covid and for the second year running is facing a high season without the tourism it so desperately needs.

“Being such a seasonal destination, it’s a double hit.”

Mr Lang said the situation had “created a very rare opportunity” for those in WA and the Territory.

“El Questro is usually near impossible to get into unless you book well in advance,” he said.

“Not only are there bookings up for grabs but we’re offering ‘stay three nights, pay two nights’ deals at both the Homestead and Emma Gorge and the Station.

“That’s around $350 per night in a tented cabin at Emma Gorge.

“Or, for those wanting a more authentic camping experience we have twin tents at the Station available for around $175 per night, with camp sites also available.

“The Kimberley needs support right now and we hope people will take advantage of these very rare offers.”
